sedation dentistry columbia sc

Dr. Marshall Fields is a South Carolina sedation dentist.  Sedation dentistry is the process of using sedation to improve patient relaxation, increase comfort, and reduce anxiety that accompanies some patients.  We want and expect you to have a good experience with us, and for patients that have any anxiety or reluctance to make regular dental visits or have dental procedures done, sedation dentistry can provide the comfort and relaxation needed to get through dental visits and procedures.

Nitrous Oxide

One type of sedation dentistry used by Dr. Marshall Fields is Nitrous Oxide which allows individuals to safely relax during procedures and return to normal quickly afterwards. This type of sedation dentistry requires the individual to breathe in the nitrous oxide to help them to relax and is often referred to as laughing gas. The professional team of dentists controls the amount of sedation throughout the procedure to ensure that the individual is still able to respond to questions and requests during the dental treatment.

Once the procedure is complete, the trained dentists will then instruct the patient to breathe in pure oxygen which reverses the effects of the nitrous oxide. After just a few minutes, the patient should feel back to normal with no lingering side effects! You’ll be able to drive home or head back to work with little to no pain.

If you have any specific questions about nitrous oxide and it’s effects on an individual during a dental procedure, feel free to contact us! We’ll always review the steps of the procedure beforehand to ensure that you feel comfortable and in good hands.

Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation is a common form of sedation dentistry which requires the patient to take a prescribed oral medication before the procedure. Because the medication completely relaxes an individual, the patient should plan for transportation to and from the procedure as you will not be able to drive.

During the procedure, the patient’s vital signs will be continuously monitored. The relaxing effects of the oral sedation may cause an individual to forget what happened during the appointment, so it’s best to bring a friend or family member to the appointment to help with paperwork and transportation.

The team of professional dentists at Carolina Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry have years of experience using sedation dentistry during dental procedures.
